WHO WAS Count CAGLIOSTRO?
The most mysterious alchemist in history, his identity is still a mystery. Many assumptions have been made about his mysterious person, some positive and others negative. For his alchemical and magical culture it was certainly very inconvenient to the Church.
Some historical researches believe that Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, of presumed Portuguese origin, and Giuseppe Balsamo from Palermo were two different people. This would also appear in a recent book by the two scholars – father and son – Raffaele and Tommaso De Chirico.
The confusion between the two characters would have been desired by Cagliostro’s enemies, primarily the Inquisition, who would have paid Balsamo and his wife to play the role of Cagliostro as a fraudulent impostor and thus discredit him in the eyes of the people. Cagliostro himself, however, without clarifying his real identity, said about himself to the Attorney General of Paris in 1786:
“The truth about me will never be written, because no one knows it.
